ADVICE TO FARMERS
PENNY WISE, POUND FOOLISH.
REFEIGEEATOR SPACE WANTED.
Farmers who for various reasons are holding back their stock from the refrigerators receive a word of warning from the Prime Minister Refrigerating space on the overseas boats at present is' wasting, and Mr. Massey fears that if the meat comes forward with a rush later there may may a recurrence of last season's troubles, when a, shortage of space occurred. "' Several steamers , have left New Zealand for London recently with their insulated space only partly filled with frozen meat," said Mr. Massey yesteru ' '"/^is is» of course, owing to the abnofmal season,we are experiencing. I suppose there never was so much grass m the North Island as there is at present. Store stock axe in strong demand and are consequently selling at high prices. Knowing the difficulty of replacing their fat stock with stores farmers are m no hurry to send the former to the freezing works. The wet season with consequent delay in shearing operations is also a very important factor. "What is happening now may lead to serious difficulty later on, as in the beginning of the year (say in February) there' will probably be a rush to the freezing works with which neither the works nor the shipping may be able to cope. I would advise farmers, therefore, in their own interests,- where it is possible for them to do so, to assist m keeping the works going and so avoid a similar difficulty to that we experienced last season." The ■steamer Star of Scotland will leave to-day 3500 carcases short of her full consignment, after waiting ten days in order to fill her space The Karamea left on 28th November with a shortage of 1600 carcases. The Kaikoura sailed ten days previously with her lower insulated hold filled with general cargo and the Orari was now loading general cargo in insulated space
