PERMITS AND PASSPORTS

The approach of the Christmas holidays is bringing to the office of the Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs numerous applications for permits to travel abroad. The whole of St. Andrew's Day the Department's staff were busy attending to these applications, and to other requests for passports from travellers going further afield. All applications for permission to leave New Zealand have now to be accompanied with a photograph of the applicant. A certain proportion of young men eligible for military service are still applying for permissions to leave, and in such cases the most careful investigation is made as to the accuracy of the reasons given for departure. "Where the authorities are not satisfied the application is held over. j In the case of travellers to Egypt or Europe passports are now not only optional, but absolutely necessary. The passports which are being issued differ from the more,or less perfunctory papers which were previously issued from here. The Minister then has investigation made, and it all is satisfactory His Excellency is then advised and affixes his signature The cost of the passport is ss, and it requires renewal every two years.
