BRIGHTER WEATHER

Fair weather generally has ruled during the past twenty-four hours. There iras a, slight local thunderstorm in the vicinity of Wellington yesterday, and two points of rain fell in the" city, freshes are reported in rivers on the West Coast, and conditions in Foveaux Straits have been changeable. The weather is fair to-day with the barometer rising everywhere.. Moderate to strong southerly winds have predominated. The forecast is for moderate to strong southoast breezes backing by east to north, northward of Patea and Napier and west elsewhere. Cloudy weather may be expected generally. Dairymen in th* Ashburton district this year are experiencing .anything but a good season owing to the' prolonged spell of dry weather (says the Guardian). Feed on most dairy farms is now scarce, and in consequence the supply of milk at the factory is only about half of last season, although the supply is drawn from more cows. A dairy farmer informed a Guardian reporter that the outlook for the coming winter is far from promising, because it will only be in odd cases where farmers wiil be able to save hay for winter feed. "The position," he added, "was bad last winter, and many of the herds came into profit iii poor condition and have not yet fully regained their average milk-giving capacity." It was intended by .the Ashburton. Dairy Company to open their new cheese factory at filack Bridge this season, but owing to the shortage in the milk supply the building ■will probably not be opened until next season.
