It is stated in Federal Labour circles that Mr. Andrew Fisher is retiring from active politics and succeeding Sir George Reid as High Commissioner. It is understood that he does not retire before Parliament meets on 27th October. SIR GEORGE REID EULOGISED. LONDON, 13th October. The Daily Chronicle, in a sub-leader, emphasises the public-spiritedness of Sir George Reid's offer to continue to act as High Commissioner for Australia without pay, and adds : "We will welcome Mr. Fisher, but we regret Sir George Reid's retirement. Corrie, a well-known Gilbert Island trader, with his wife and two children and several natives aboard, has been missing since 23rd May. It is feared they have drifted to sea and perished. ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES •TRIAL OF MRS. RAPHAEL. (Received October 14, 2 p.m.) LONDON, 13th October. The trial of Mrs. Raphael commenced at the Old Bailey. Evidence was given that her husband allowed "her £1000._ a year under the marriage settlement, and that she had also received £8000 from her father since her marriage in 1913. Counsel for the defence alleged that Walter Raphael was paying for the prosecution of his own daughter-in-law. [Mrs. Marjorie Augusta Raphael, wellknown in Australia, was committed for Crial for alleged fraud and false pretences by obtaining credit at a- leading hotel ; also for obtaining £500 worth of jewellery and using it to pay her debts to a drapery firm. The evidence showed that accused was locked out of her hotel. Her husband filed a petition in bankruptcy in March.]
