NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Sir Lancelot.") Sabana did the best of the Rokeby fillies sent up from Porirua for the Hastings Stakes. She finished in a place behind the Karamu-bred Hyttus (Hymettus — Enna) and Barley Sugar (Maori King — Barley Bree). Enna missed in 1912 to Hymettus. The same year Barley Bree had a colt by Maori King which died. At the Grand. National Meeting Moddite (the New South Wales-bred gelding by Royal Artillery) won the Trial Hurdles and ran third in the Sydenham Hurdles to Diavolo (who has since won at Randwick). It wa-s thought tiiat IModdite would turn out something above the average, but his subsequent running docs not bear out that opinion. He was beaten at Geraldine by Caher Davon and Kingsway, and at Wingatui by the last-named and Crib, a New South Waies-bred gelding by Sant Ilario — Cryde, by Lochiel— Cradle, by Gozo — Carmen, by Goldsborough. Both the Dunedin winners are moderate. Kingsway is a most consistent performer. He won place-money twice at the National Meeting, won at Amberley, and earned place-money on both days of the Ashburton and Geraldine Meetings. Kingsway and Pijarna (Martian — Bloomer) are owned by Mr. G. N. M'Lean, who has gone into camp at Trentham. The Wellington-owned Korses Immep and Pall Mall have been engaged at the Waipawa Meeting on Labour Day. It will probably be easier to win at the Hawkee Bay country meeting than at Trentham. Borke's Drift, winner of the Trial Plate at Wingatui on Saturday, is one of Mr. J. C. N. Grigg's team, by CalibreMiss O'Rorke. The form at Kurow, a North , Otago country fixture, worked out well at the Dunedin Jockey Club's Meeting on Friday and Saturday. Afton Loch (Grafton Loch — Lady Dundas), Thaddeus (Vaseo — Jessie Lewars), and Robert Bell (Oanrobert — Black Bell) were successful at both meetings. The best Tim Doolan could do at Randwick was to get third money (50 soys) in the Dowlmg Steeplechase on Saturday. Mr. Gerald Stead, whose colours Tim 1 Doolan carries, won the Telegraph Welter Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday afternoon with the New South Wales-bred filly Mountain Dream (Mountain King — Moorooroo). Two four-year-old fillies were successful in the weight-for-age events at Caulfield and Randwick on Saturday. At the Melbourne meeting Traquette (Traquair— Simmerette) won the Stakes, nine furlongs, worth 1000 'sovs to the winner, from Cyklon, an imported horse by Carbine's son Spearmint, and Naxbery, the Adelaide Cup winner Cyklon was a fair performer in England as a three and won a race in the Kaiser's colours at Baden Bader as a four-year-old, He is owned by Mrs. Richard Hawker and trained by, J. Scobie, and is iD the Caulfield "and. Melbourne Cups. The Randwick Plate, two miles, worth 1400 soys to the winner, was won by Carlita (Charlemagne II. — Couronne). Last season she won the Victoria Derby and Oaks and Champion Stakes. She is engaged in the Melbourne Cup, with 8.5, and on her form on Saturday in beating St. Carwyne is entitled to a place among the probables. In his four attempts at Randwick St. Carwyne won over £6000 in stakes. and Lingle, two Linacre three-year-olds, were placed in the Grantham Stakes at Randwick on Saturday Lingle is the first progeny of Lady Pamela, by San Francisco — Bonnie Crest (by Wallace — Bonnie Rosette), a full sister to Mountain King. The names of the New Zealand Cup candidates Colonel Soult, Kooya, Potoa, Mummer, Sunbird, All Ready, Maniaroa, Plunder, Tangihou, and Fender do not appear among the nominations for the events at the C.J.C. Spring Meeting, which clo?ed on Friday last. It is likely, therefore, that the names of some of them will be missing when the nexi payment is made for the New Zealand Cup. The nominations received for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting show an all-round falling off compared with, last year. The most noticeable are in the weight-for-age events. There are 14 in the Canterbury Cup against ' 29, and 22 in the Stead Gold Cup against 40. While Carlita. was scoring in weight-for-age company at Randwick on Saturday, another four-year-old Charlemagne 11. was adding to his sire's record at Hastings. This was the Wei- ' lington-owned Roumania, who proved that his Napier Park win was no fluke by beating a better field in the Waipatu Hack Handicap, one mile. Carillon was asked to concede the winner a year and 121b. After his good .performance in the Dunedin Guineas, in which he carried 8.5 and van a mile in lmin 42 l-ssec, it will be surprising if Snub is not started in the New Zealand Cup. He has done the best of the three-year-olds in the race that have raced this season. Mr. C. G. Dalgety also took the Dunedin Stakes with Disdainful (half-sister to Snub) and the first of the progeny of Bonny Glen (Stepniak— Crest) to race. Evidently it is thought that Bee (the full-sister to Snub) will get a. dista-nce. as she has been entered foi the Metropolitan. Hylami, winner of the Maiden Hack Race at Hastings on Saturday, is a three-year-old by Hymettus from Humming Bird (Birkenhead— Lyrebird). At the Dunedin Spring Meeting last year Slogan scored in thp Mosgiel Han-dic-ap. Last week, after competing un successfully in that «vent, he won ihe principal event on the second dny. King Marco, winner of the 1010 Welter Handicap at Canlfield on Saturday, is one of Lou. Robertson's English importations by Maico — Queen Fairy. In Victoria last season lie won twice out of three starts. Later in the afternoon King Marco was saddled up again in the Toorak Handicap, and ran thiid to Mies Meadow?. The Porirua-trained Xaupata, who v>\Xi first 3nd eecond in the steeplechase events *t Otaki- won both hurdle races at Hastings. On .Saturday. _he . conceded .bis,

opponents allowances from 171b to 381b. The Mahaki gelding looks like turning out a useful stake earner for Mr. Prosser. Rewi Poto has been engaged at the Waverley Meeting on Labour Day. Patrobas, winner of the Caulfield Guineas, of 2000 on Saturday, acted as runner-up in the October Stakes, weight-for-age, at Flemington the previous week. Patrobas is by Wallace from Sizzle, by Simmer, and was bred by Messrs. Mitchell, owners of Trafalgar. Patrobas is engaged in the Victoria Derby and the Melbourne Cup with the minimum weight. llr. E. J. Watt had his colours carried in three States on Saturday. Barley Sugar, Blackall, and Downham ran in his name at Hastings ; Sea Pink, who retains his form_ wweltl t ran second in the Waverley Handicap, one mile and three-quartei's, at Randwick. He was unlucky to get beaten in record time for Australasia. Maori Mat was suc•cessful in the Debutante Stakes, worth 1100 soys to the winner, at Caulfield. Maori Mat is one of Mr. Watt's own breeding, by Maori King — Tatters (dam of Tatterley), and is one of the first batch of the progeny of the Merriwee horse to race. Maori Mat is not engaged in the Maribyrnong Plate, to be ran at Flemington on the 30tb inst. In the Mosgiel Handicap Warstep failed to concede the four-year-old Meltchikoif 471b and the three-year-old Adjutant 41b less. Meltehikoff ran well at the Grand National Meeting, and at Geraidine won one race and dead-heated in another. He is a full brother to Mowbray, who was about the best twa-year-old of his year, and won £1725 ir stakes at that age, but unfortunately went in the 'wind. Both performers were purchased at the Sydney yearling sales, Mowbray by Mr. J. B. Reid and Meltehikoff by Mr. G. D. Greenwood. Lady Melton (their dam) is a well-bred mare by Bill of Portland — Litigant (winner of the V.R.C. Oaks), by Martini-Henry. The Caulfield Stakes winner, Traquette, won the Memsie Stakes, a weight-for-age race worth 400 soys to the winner, run over the same distance as the Caulfield Stakes, on 4th September. Mr. T. H. Lowry purchased Lady Kilworth from his trainer, F. Davis, prior to the start of the* Hastings Stakes, and she carried her new owner's colours in that event. - * In connection with the Spring Meeting of the Masterton Racing Club, to be held at the Opaki Racecourse to-morrow, Wellington patrons of the club will be able to do the trip on the day. The field engaged in the opening event, the Trial Stakes, five furlongs, includes three two-year-olds. One of them, Menelaus, is the full brother to the Wanganui Guineas winner, Nones. Sedd-el-Bahr, runner-up to Seadown on the concluding day at Wanganui, may be sent out favourite if not reserved for the Telephone Hack Handicap, six furlongs, the next event on the card. The field includes no less than five horses that showed winning form at Otaki. W. Garrett's Opaki-trained pair, Veronal and Three, head the list in the Flying Handicap. Whichever of the pair is started is likely to be well supported. . Although the Spring Handicap stake is worth 225 soys, the winner's share is only 145 soys, and consequently does not carry a penalty in the New Zealand Cup. Sinapiswill be making her third appearance in the race. Two years ago she ran second to Expect, and the Highden horse scored again last year from Lady Louisa. The Cup candidates engaged to-morrow are Pavlova, Sinapis, .Rinaldo, Multiply, Maniaroa, and Tangihou. The two lastnamed ran well in the Horqwhenua Cup, and if Maniaroa can win with 251b more than he has in the Cup, he will have to be reckoned with at Riccarton. When sent out favourite at Hastings on Saturday Multiply finished last, and appears to be none too reliable. Rinaldo (whose first appearance it will be this season) may be best backed, because he is the representative of F. Tilley's stable. Last season Rinaldo raced consistently, but w,en^ through without a win, and the success of Mr. W. Duncan's colours | would be well received. Tangihou may prove the best of the light weights. Ruatangata and Chatto may be expected to show up well in the Ladies' I Bracelet, for gentlemen riders. Sir Solo, who raced in Australia last Season, is down to make his reappearance in the Stewards' Handicap, seven furlongs. The result of the Dash Hack Handicap,' five furlongs, may to some extent depend, on the draw Diavolo (11.5) was top weight in the | Emo Hurdles, two miles and 64 yards, decided at Caulfield this afternoon. The New Zealand Cup candidate Marc Antony pulled up lame after galloping at Riccarton on Saturday morning, and is considered an unlikely starter in the race mentioned. The electric starting barrier, similar 'to that in use at Ellerslie, will be used at the forthcoming meeting at Trentham.
