NATIONAL RESERVE
The Wellington South, Island Bay, and Berhampore sections of the National Reserve paraded the city streets on Tuesday night. There was a muster of about 200. The companies fell in at Colombostreet, Newtown, and, headed by the Tramway Band, they marched along Adelaide-road, round the Basin Reserve, along Kent-terrace, Courtenay-place, Manners-street, Willis-street, and Lamb-ton-quay to the Post Office-square, and thence along Jervois-quay to opposite the Town Hall. Here an address was delivered by Major J. P. Firth, who congratulated the units on their splendid showing. He mentioned that the Government was calling for more recruits. Already the National Reserve had provided 3000, and he looked to see that number doubled. He was very satisfied with the development of the Reserve, and the great improvement shown in drill and general movements. The Reservists were repeatedly cheered during their long march. There was a fairly good muster of the Brooklyn unit of the National Reserve at the State School grounds last evening. Captain J. W. Steel was the officer in command.- The men were put through platoon movements and musketry exer-. cises, and showed up well. Capable instructors in the theory and practice of rifle fire are in attendance at the range on four evenings a week and Saturday afternoons, and members who aspire to become good shots have now every opportunity of doing so. The attendance so far is encouraging. Several new members have been added to the roll of late, and others contemplating joining should do so at once for drill purposes. Men who have volunteered for the front but have not been called up are invited to fall in with the weekly squad, and may also have instruction at the rifle range.
