PRACTICAL PROTECTION
" During the session," said the Hon. G. W. Russell in the House of Representatives to-day, " many pleasant and gratifying announcements have been made of patriotism on the part of the people. The people of Otago had set a very fine example by establishing a fund for the help of the residents of Scotland and the adjacent islands. During the last few days he had received a bank receipt for the sum of £1000, being the proceeds of a fund which had been subscribed, and which was being sent to the High Commissioner for expenditure in the direction indicated, the whole of the details of the expenditure to be left in the hands of the Hon. T. Mackenzie." The House received the announcement with applause.
