SMALLPOX IN AUSTRALIA
QUESTION- IN PARLIAMENT. • When the House of Representatives met to-day, Mr. G. Witty referred to recent cables from Australia to the effect that smallpox had assumed considerable proportions in Newcastle, and he wanted to know what steps .the Government is taking to prevent it reaching New Zealand. The Hon. G. W. Russell said, in reply, that the matter had already engaged the attention of the Public Health I Department. It was not considered necessary at the present time to set up anything in the nature of a system of quarantine between New Zealand and Australia, but every precaution was being taken, and would be taken, by the Department. Experts considered that at present there was no necessity to do more than take the ordinary precautions.
