WATERSIDE WORKERS
SUGGESTED LEGISLATION. A suggestion was made by Mr. T. M. Wilford, in the House of Representatives to-day, that a one-clause Bill be introduced by the Prime Minister making provision to admit persons to unions who are of good character. This provision was made in all awards which contained the preference clause. Mr. Massey replied that the Auckland Watersiders were working under an agreement, and he believed the same thing applied to the men in the South Island. He <Jid not think it wa6 right to force any man on a union if the others objected. Mr. P. C. Webb : " You'll be sorry for that policy some day." Mr. Massey : "We . have 1200 men who say that things are very satisfactory." He was going to allow the Bill he had previously introduced to stand' down until early next session, and the men could then give evidence before the Labour Bills Committee.
