CHARGE OF DESERTION
MAORI BKING TRIED BY A COURT-MARTIAL. (BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Corporal J. M. Hofa, a member of the Maori Contingent, is being tried by court-martial on a charge of desertion. Prosecuting counsel said this offence had been very rife among the Maori force, and it was desired to bring home to the Maoris generally that desertion was a serious matter. The maximum sentence the court could impose was two years' imprisonment, but a general courtmartial was empowered to impose the death penalty. Accused had Jeft the camp on 14th September, changed into mufti, and travelled by tram to Huntlj. where he met the Maori King. Ten days later he was arrested at Taupiri. He then stated that the Maori King had informed him that if he signed a book he would be free. Counsel added that the Maori King's statement did not conoborate that of accused. The case is proceeding. A _ similar charge against another [ Maori deserter follows.
