RIFLE BATTALIONS

NOW BEING MOBILISED THE LOCAL CONTINGENT PARADE 64 MEN SHORT. The mobilisation of the new battalions —3rd and 4th Battalions New Zealand Rifle Brigade (The Earl of Liverpool's Own)— recently accepted by the Imperial Government was commenced to-day, when contingents from various parts of the Dominion left to go into Trentham Camp. The new battalions, with thenown Army Service Corps, will receive their equipment at Trentham, and a few dayg later will go into camp at the May Morn Mill, Mungaroa, where they will put in six weeks receiving their musketry and preliminary training. They will then go on to Rangiotu, where they will complete their training in New Zealand The Wellington section (city and suburbs) paraded at the Drill Hall, Buckle-street, this morning. The muster, however, was a disappointing one, as there were no less than seventy-one men short. Seven other recruits (passed as fit), who turned up on the off chance of "getting in," immediately realised their desire, and were incorporated in the ranks accordingly. There being no more men within call the Wellington city contingent thus went into camp sixty-four men short. The men for the Rifle Battalions, portion of the 9th Reinforcements, and n.c.o's for the 10th Reinforcements, were paraded together at 12.30, and headed by the sth (Wellington) Regiment's band playing martial airs marched through the principal streets to Lambton station. They made a good showing, being, as a whole, men of first-class physique, and quite up to the standard of any draft previously sent in.
