RECRUITING
TO THB EDITOR. Sir, — The appearance of the troops who marched through the city on Saturday afternoon last should certainly stimulate those who are wavering to the enlisting point. The next week should show what is the result. No doubt there are a number of men who have offered their services, and have been disheartened at not being accepted because the authorities are not prepared. Why could not the authorities have informed those who have offered their services, and those who have not, that in order to save time — and time is the important factor, as men are put out of action quicker than they can be put in — that the Government would make arrangements that all offering could undergo a certain portion of drill, such as digging trenches, the ÜBB of the rifle, etc., etc., at such times as would suit, and would not interfere with their ordinary works, and I feel sure all employers would give the necessary leave, should such be required, if any extra time was wanted. Judging from the accounts of the fighting on the Gallipoli Peninsula, the main work there is to be active in hiding, a good shot, and a good pick and shovel man. No need for a lot of drill in the ordinary acceptation of the term. Why is the word "conscription" such a bugbear? Why should not those who can, and ought to go, be made to go? Why should the willing ones always have to bear the brunt? There are dozens of men in the Civil Service fit to, and who should go, and plenty of elderly ones to take their places during their absence. — I am, etc., DO NOT DELAY.
