NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Sir Lancelot.") Owners and trainers are finally reminded that nominations for the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting, to be held on 23rd and 25th inst., close to-night at 9 o'clock, with Mr. A. E. Whyfce (secretary). None of the place-getters in the Dunedin Stakes competed in the- Dominion Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. The winner, Thestius, by Martian, was making his first appearance and. was No. 1 on the card. He is the first son. of Lady Lilian to race, a full brother, two years older, having died. Lady Lilian and her dam, Lady Zetland, were great performers, but strange to cay the female line of success has not been continued in the family. Lady Lilian had two fillies by Pilgrim's Progress (Lady Victoria and Lady Talbot) and two fillies by Martian (Lady Marcia and Lady Minerva) before producing Saturday's winner, who is spoken of -as a wellgrown colt. Mr. Angus Gordon went south on Saturday to officiate as stipendiary steward at the South Canterbury Meeting. Several of Mr. Wilfred Stead's team showed up prominently ah Hastings on Friday and Saturday." The Maltster filly Sweet Corn, who gave great promise as a two-year-old by running second in tho Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick twelve . months ago, won a race each day. There are only a few Maltsters racing in the Dominion. Bimeter, who won at Wanganui, is one of them. On Saturday, Mr. Stead's odours were carried into second place by Red Book (who haa been placed on previous occasions this season) and Eligible, who was defeated by the consistent Pursefiller in the Final Handicap. Reputation will make his next appearance in the Caulfield Cup, to be run on Saturday next. He will carry Bst 81b, the same impost St. Carwyne had in the Metropolitan. It iooks af if Mr. T. H. Lowry is in for another good season with, the small but ' select team F. Davis has in work at Greenmeadows. Egypt scored the first time out at the Park, and two other members of the team were successful in two of the principal events at Hastings on Saturday. Desert Gold, the champion two-year-old of last season, made her first appearance in the Hawkes Bay Guineas, worth only 250 soys to the winner, and placed the event to her owner's credit. The Wellington-owned filly Taringamutu, who raced consistently at Wanganui and Otaki, beat the other local competitors, and gained the 40 soys second money. The three-year-old black colt Marco Bello (Marco — Adria) defeated the Cup candidates Multiply, Mummer, Sir Alba, Midnight Star, and Blackall in the Spring Handicap. When sent out favourite at Dannevirke and Napier Park he let his supporters down, and they deserted him on Saturday. The colt looked too pretty at Dannevirke to run out a distance, and evidently wanted a race or two. He is a nice colt, and should be handy in a race like the Auckland Guineas. This was Mr. Lowry's first success in the Hawkes Bay Guineas. Trainer F. Davis was on Renown when he won the race fifteen years ago. • DUNEDIN J.C.
