(BT TELEGRAPH— PKESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Bth October. The rain, that has fallen in Canterbury during the past few days is expected to have a very beneficial effect upon the grain crops. The rain has been light, but will penetrate cultivated land. There is no change in the grain markets. The rise in the potato market in Melbourne and Sydney has been reflected locally, and £7 to £7 5s is now being paid at country stations. The improvement in prices, so far from, bringing forward more abundant supplies, has rather had the. opposite effect, and growers are holding more firmly, offerings during the >yeek b£ing_scarce.
