LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL After The Post had gone to press yesterday the Legislative Council agreed to the motion by the Hon. Geo. Jones, urging the Government to ensure the better delivery of parcels for the soldiers at the front. « A message was received stating that the House of Representatives had agreed to the amendment made by the Council to the Lake Coleridge Water Empowering Bill. The War Regulations Amendment Bill (No. 2) was put through its remaining stages and passed without amendment. The following local Bills were read a first time and referred to various Local Bills Committees : — Tauranga Foreshore Investing' and Empowering Amendment Bill, Otago Harbour Board Empowering Bill, Dunedin District Drainage and Sewerage Amendment Bill, Devonport Borough Vesting Bill, Springs County Council Reclamation and Empowering Bill, and Lytteltop « Borough Extension Amendment Bill. The Inglewood Borough Endowments and Disposal Bill was read a first time and referred to the Local' Bills Committee. The New Zealand University Amendment Bill and the Counties Amendment Bill were put through all stages and passed, the latter with amendments. WASHING-UP BILL. The Reserves and Other Lands Disposal and Public Bodies' Empowering Bill (the Washing-up Bill) was put through all 6tages. In Committee clause 125 was amended to allow all acclimatisation societies, and not only the Canterbury Society, to col lect and sell the eggs of black swans. A number of technical amendments were made, and two new clauses were added, making the total number in tho Bill 139. The Bill was passed. The Council rose at 10.10 p.m. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES In the House of Representatives last night the Land Laws Amendment Bill was amended in Committee and evoked a. good deal of discussion. Most of the debate hinged on clause 18, which provided for the acquisition of the fee simple in the Westland mining districts, the most strenuous opponent of which was Mr. H. G. Ell. The House was divided on the clause, and the voting resulted in it being retained by 32 votes to 7. Clause 20, enabling the holder of a lease of a small grazing run I of Crown land to acquire the fee simple lof his area, was struck out. In its amended form the Bill was reported to the House, was read a third time, and passed. The House adjourned at 4.45 a.m.
