TRAINING SHIP AMOKURA
VISIT -BY HIS .EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR. His Excellency the Governor [the Earl of Liverpool) paid » visit of inspection to the training-ship A mrdrwa.- yesterday afternoon I , for the purpose of presenting tho Royal Naval Reserve service medal to Mr. A, D. Vaa-ian, who has been a coin--roissioned officer of the Royal Nstval Reserve for ttpwTvrds off fifteen, The visitor -was received by a, guard of honour, ' under Seaman-Instructor"^ -Knox. There were aleo , present the Hon Dr. M*Nab (Minister for Marine), accompanied by his secretary, Mr. J. ,W. Black and Mt. Geo. Allport, Secretary -of Marine. After reading the communication from His Majesty tho King, requesting him to present the medal, His Excellency pinned the decoration to i3ie recipient's breast, *nd congratulated Mr. Varisn on the ■honour conferred upon him. The ceremony concluded, EBs^ Excellency reviewed the boys, who "were in charge of their officers Owing to the inclemency of the weather, this fraction, took place in the Harbour Board's ehed. • After this a brief visit of inspection was paid to the ship, during which His Excellency inspected the defaulters' book,and congratulated Commander Hooper, R.N.R., and his officers on the small number of entries and the lightness of the offences. Arrangements iv connection with the welcome to the Rarotongan troops necessitated His Excellency's departure, after a short -stay on board the teainingship. It is anticipated that the vessel will leave- Wellington on her -spring cruise to the southern islands this afternoon. Engineer Varian. joined the merchant service in 1890 and the Royal Nxval Reserve in 1899 He commenced drill in H.M.S. Duke of Edmborgh/in 1900, and two years afterwards obtained his commission as engineer R.N.R. He was chief engineer of a Russian hospital ship during the Russo-Japanese War. Mr. Varian cams to New Zealand as guarantee engineer of the s.s. Ksiraki He joined the Amoltura -as second engineer in 1912. At the outbreak of war he volunteered -for service, and is at present awaiting instructions from the Admiralty.
