TRAINING SHIP AMOKURA

Engineer Varian. joined the merchant service in 1890 and the Royal Nxval Reserve in 1899 He commenced drill in H.M.S. Duke of Edmborgh/in 1900, and two years afterwards obtained his commission as engineer R.N.R. He was chief engineer of a Russian hospital ship during the Russo-Japanese War. Mr. Varian cams to New Zealand as guarantee engineer of the s.s. Ksiraki He joined the Amoltura -as second engineer in 1912. At the outbreak of war he volunteered -for service, and is at present awaiting instructions from the Admiralty.
