PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
The Astronomical Section of the Wellington Philosophical Society held its annual meeting last night, Mr. A. C. Gifford presiding. The annual report stated that there was a membership of sixty, with an average attendance of twenty-five at meetings held during the year. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £32 5s 7d. "Some Points in the Theory of Optical Instruments" wa-s the subject of an interesting address delivered by Professor Marsden. Tho following officers were elected for the section during the ensuing year : — Chairman, Mr. C. G. G. Berry ; hon. member of section, Miss Mary Proctor; vice-chairmen, /Mr. C. P. Powles, Professor E Marsden, D.Sc, and Mr. 0. J. Westland, F.R.A.S. ; committee. Mr. G. Hogben. M.A., F.G.S. ; Mr. E. Varry, B.Sc, M.I E.E., A.M.1.C.E. ; Professor D. M. Y. Sommerville, M.A., D.Sc. ; Dr. C. M. Hector, M.D., B.Sc; Mr. A. C. Gifford, M.A., F.R.A.S. ; Mr. W. S. La Trobe, M A. ; and Captain G. S. Hooper. Director and curator of instruments, Mr. C. J. Westland, F.R.A.S.; hon. treasurer. Mr. C. P. Powles; hon. secretary, Mr. E. G. Jones, B.A.
