BINOCULARS FOR OFFICERS

SPECIAL BAND CONCERT. Arrangements have been made (with Colonel Fulton's permission) for the "Earl of Liverpool's Own" Trentham Regimental Band to give a concert at the large Town Hall to-morrow night (Friday). This will be the only opportunity afforded the Wellington public of hearing this very fine military band before it leaves for the front. The band is 44 strong, and Palmerston and Wanganui audiences have been very highly pleased with the concerts which it has given. The instructor (Bandmaster Cole) has turned his band into a remarkably good combination ; indeed quite a number of New Zealand's best bandsmen are members of the band. Mr. Holmes, manager of "The Armies of Europe at War" Film Company, being the lessee of the Town Hall for Friday, has kindly consented to allow the band to use the hall, and, in addition, "The Armies of Europe at War" Company will screen some actual war films at intervals throughout the evening. As a very large attendance of tho public is expected, the doors will open early. Portion of the proceeds will be used to provide binoculars for the officers of the Trentham Regiment. These binoculars are urgently needed. It is hoped the public of Wellington will show their appreciation of the generous offer of the band in foregoing their leave to provide what can safely be termed an exclusive musical treat. The plan is at the Bristol, ,and popular prices are to be charged. Invitations are being extended to Cabinet Ministers and Defence authorities. Full details will be announced in to-morrow's papers. After the concert the members K of the band will be entertained at supper by the New Zealand Patriotic Society. A SPECIAL APPEAL. As a large number of the officers who are among the troops to march through the city on Saturday are not yet provided with binoculars — articles which every officer must possess— the New Zealand Patriotic Society is making a special appeal for such suitable gifts. "We have purchased as many as are procurable in the city," said Mr. J. Lewis, the secretary, to-day, " and now we appeal to all persons who have binoculars t-o rob their wardrobes of such and present them. to the officers who require pairs." It is imperative that each officer should have a pair, and those willing to make this small sacrifice are requested to send the binoculars to Mr. Lewis, at No. 18, Grey-street, before to-morrow evening. MAGISTRATE'S COURT • There was a light calendar on the criminal side of the Magistrate's Court this morning, Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presiding. Two first-offenders, charged with drunkenness, were leniently dealt with; one, a soldier in uniform, was ordered to be handed over to the military authorities. John Thomas Oliver was fined £1, in default three days' imprisonment ; and Ernest Cox was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment, on a similar charge. On the application of Mr. H. F. O'Leary, who appeared for George Francis Healey, charged with failing to comply with a maintenance order issued_ at Gore for the maintenance of his child, the arrears amounting to £19 4s, a remand was granted for a week, bail of £20 being allowed.
