MORE RAIN
EAST COAST FAVOURED. "The long-continued drought has at last broken, 65 points of rain having fallen last night. The sky is still over- '- cast, and we are sure to get more. This rain, will save the wheat crops and will bring -away the much-needed grass." That is what Mr. John Macpherson, tho well-known pastoralist of Totara Estate, Oamaru, says in a letter to the Government Meteorologist, and corroborative evidence comes from, other sources. A Press Association message from i Ashburton, dated the 6th instant, says: — The rainfall in the Ashburton County during the 24- hours ended 5 o'clock this afternoon ranged from half an inch in town and surrounding districts to three-quarters of an inch near Ihe hills. The fall is the best since the autumn, and was very badly needed, though it is insufficient still. For the nine months ended 30th September, the rainfall was less by ten inches than the fall in the first nine months of 1914. The Temuka correspondent of the Christchurch Press telegraphed on Tuesday night that at 7.30 p.m. beneficent rain commenced to fall, and there was every indication that; it would continue throughout the night. , A considerable fall of rain occurred in Wellington to-day, with light wind from the south. The Meteorologist reports that the barometer has risen very high in the south, that showers are reported from the east coast of the South Island, and that there- Js general rain on the east coast of the North Island. The atmospheric pressure is relatively low in the north, -and the gradient is all for strong, easterly winds. The weather is likely to be unsettled in the North Island and on the east coast of the South Island, and in some parts cold and showery. A cold night may be anticipated. The indications for a fair week-end predominate, but there is by no means a certainty in this respect. A Press Association message from Masterton states : Steady rain set in today. It will do enormous benefit to crops ;ind pastures. The rain has put the Masterton racecourse iv splendid condition for the Spring Meeting.
