November 3^ and 6— Auckland E..C. Spring. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Sir Lancelot.") The sprinter Gigandra., by Ibex (who defeated Cruciform in the Craven Plate) is lasting a long time. He has been competing in metropolitan company for the last four seasons. In the Shorts Handicap on Monday last Gigandra had a lighter weight than he has been used to carry. Two years ago he won the same race with 10.2 up, when ridden by the New Zealand horseman A. Oliver. Two of the second batch of Linacre's progeny I showed up well, although neither managed to score a win. Panacre ran second in The Shorts, and Lingle ran third in the Clibborn Stakes. In the latter event the Derby winner, Cetinge, carried a stone penalty and defeated the consistent Westcourt. Reputation was handicapped out of the Metropolitan, but managed to struggle on into third place behind St. Carwyne and William the Silent. St. Carwyne was remarkably well treated in the Caulfield Cup with 8.7, but a stone penalty should stop him. Mountain Knight was considered well in with 8.13. He has to concede R-epu-tation 51b, and on Spring Stakes form the New Zealand colt appears to have the best of it. William the Silent looks well in with "6.13. Another imported horse well in the race is the four-year-old Lavendo (Chaucer — Lavello), winner of the October Stakes, weight-for-age, last Saturday! He is in the Caulfield Cnp with 7.2. Wolaroi, winner of the Breeders' Plate, is one of the second batch of the progeny of the French-bred horse Kenilworth. He had one representative in the Dominion last season in ] Housewife, at present racing at wick. The runner-up. Sister Satellite (The Welkin — Wilga), is a full sister to Welkin Queen, winner of the Karrakatta Plate in Westralia last season. Earlier in the season, Sister Satellite won the Pulham Park Plate at Adelaide, and carried a stone penalty. The other place-getter, Lucky Dip (Orzil — The Prize) cost only 100 guineas as a yearling. Toatere.put up his best performance to date in the Squatters' Handicap, a mile and a-quarter, in which he' carried 9.6, and ran second in 2min Bsec. Aurarius (dam of Croesus, Desert Gold, and Egypt) is about the only daughter of Maltster at the stud in the Dominion. ■Tressida, runner-up in the Juvenile Handicap at Napier Park, is one of the first batch of the progeny of imported Tressady 1 to race. She was purchased at the last Sydney autumn sales by Mr. J. S. M'Leod, of Hawkes Bay, and is trained by V. H. Colello. She was bred at Mr. William Brown's Segenhoe Stud, Scone, Hunter River, New South Wales. Tressady was bred in England in 1907, and' was a good performer on the English Turf. As a two-year-old he won the Molecomb Stakes (£910) and Doncaster Sale Stakes (£850). He also won the Houghton Stakes, and performed well as a three-year-old, at which ag&^he ran third in the Greenham Stakes to Bronzjno, and third in the Craven Stakes to Neil Gow and Whisk Broom. Tressady is by Persimmon from Simplify, by Arklow (brother in blood to Ormonde) from Criosphinx (half-sister to Enigma). Princess Melton (dam of Tressida) is a half-sister to Baw Bee, Piastre, Bee Bee and Chantress. by Duke of Melton (imp.) from Chand Bee Bee (imp.) by Royal Hampton. This is a great family, and it will not be surprising if Tressida, bred as she is, turns out a smart galloper. Eight Tressady yearlings realised 1455 guineas, an average of 182 guineas. Strange to say, Tressida was the cheapest of the lot. She brought only 95 guineas, and is the first to get back part of hor purchase money. She is not engaged in the Hastings Stakes. Mr. Ronald Duncan has been appointed judge to the Methven Racing Club. Queenie Soult (Soult — Guidwife) and Valhalla (Hierarch — Peace) were among the winners at the Kensington Meeting on 29th September. Valhalla was also among the winners at Victoria Park a week previously. The Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting will be continued this afternoon. The programme of events to be decided' includes the Craven Plate, weight-for-age, one mile and a-quarter, in which Woorak (last year's winner of the race) and Reputation will probably meet Diavolo is in the Second Hurdle Race, Athenic in the Suburban Handicap (one mile), and Sea Pink in the Sydney Handicap (one mile and a-half). Acceptances for all eventsat the Masterton R.C Meeting, including the Trial Stakes, close with the secretary, Mr. A. Hathaway, at his office, Qneen-etreet, Masterton, on Friday next, at 10 p.m. SCRATCHINGS FOR RANDWICK ENGAGEMENTS (By Tel«jraph.— Press Association.— Copyrlf**.) SYDNEY. sth October. Mountain Knight has been scratched for all Randwick engagements ; Delmonte has been scratched for the Members' Handicap, and Athenic for the Suburban Handicap. MOUNTAIN KNIGHT SCRATCHINGS CAUSE WILD STATEMENTS. SYDNEY, sth October. Mountain Knight hae a-ko been scratched for his Victorian Amateur Turf Club engagements. Wild statements are afloat as to' the cause, some alleging that the horse has been poisoned — a victim to dope. Another story, and one that is likely to be true, is that the horse's mouth was burnt a littlej and this caused him considerable pain. This, experts say, could be caused by one of several weeds which may be picked up in hay or elsewhere. However, it is satisfactory to know that Mountain Knight is nothing like a dead one, as he did slow work today. As he was a hot favourite for the Caulfield Cup, his withdrawal caused -something approaching a sensation.
