PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The fortnightly meeting of the Committee of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last evening, Mr. William Watson presiding. Captain Henry, the society's inspector, reported having made enquiries regarding a shipment of sheep which had arrived mv Wellington by the steamer Wootton. During the trip very heavy weather had been encountered, resulting ir. the deaths of twenty-eight sheep. The loss was entirely unavoidable. Several minor cases had also been attended to since the last meeting. AyA v letter was received from the R.S.P.C.A. in London thanking the Wellington Society for its contribution of £10 7s towards the Wounded Horses Fund. Up to the present, the letter stated, hospital accommodation had been provided for 4000 horses, and a furtherrequest for a fourth hospital was being attended to. The sum of £40,000 had been collected up to date, but it was quite evident that a further £20,000 would be necessary to continue the humane work. Pearce, 3s 6d; "2 Lloyd-street," 3s; Messrs. Marchant, Eason, J. G. Turner, A. R. Brooker, G. Wilton, ,H, B. King, "Friend," "B. B. and Son," "J.F.C.," "R.H.ME.," N. A. Stevens, and "T.W.," 2s 6d each; Mr. W C. Hampton, Mrs Lawless, Mrs. Barber, 2s each ; "Two Friends," Is each.
