PATRIOTIC FUNDS

Mr. C. M. Luke gave the righfcadvice last evening to the Patriotic Society when he said he felt sure that the gifts for the -wounded soldiers would increase with a definite trusteeship and administration of the fund. The meeting appointed a committee to confer with the Mayor, and as Mr. J. P. Luke is as eager as his brother to help in arranging a permanent system of management, some progress should be seen soon. The experience of the Patriotic Society proves the importance of adopting a plan of management before a fund is raised. When the people irere contributing money in large sums there were prophets who hinted at a problem of administration, and the predictions have been partly verified. However, in fairness to the local society, it has to be said that it has been waiting to see the result of the efforts to form a National Board. It is recognised now that, even if such a council is evolved out of the interprovincial discussions, it will be rather an advisory body than an executive one. The plain need at present is prompt preparation for a wise use of the money raised in this district.
