CYCLE WORKERS

AN INDUSTRIAL AGREEMENT

Parties to the cycle worked' dispute met yesterday, the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally) presiding. Meetings had previously' been held at Palmerston North, Napier," and -Wanganui, and a tentative agreement arrived at in each place, subject to confirmation at a meeting of the original council, to be held in Palmerston North towards the end of the present month. The agreement suggested and adopted in Wellington is practically on the same lines as the award by the Arbitration Court in the motor mechanics section of the engineers' dispute. It provides for a 47-hour week, and a mininram wage of Is 3d an hour. Apprentice provisions are similar to the motor mechanics, and another clause permits the employment, after apprenticeship, of improvers at Is O^d an hour. Further clauses deal with the employment of boys, under-rate workers, and preference.
