CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

.WELLINGTON COUNCIL. The Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce met yesterday, Mr. R. W. Waterhonse presiding in the absence of Mr. J. Macintosh, who was detained by other business. Other members present were : Messrs. T. Ballinger, W. J. Thompson, C. W. Jones, James M'Lellan, W. J. Bridson, and J. G. Harkness. Leave of absence was granted | to Messrs. W. S. Bennett and D. A. Ewen. The statement of finances showed cash at bank £20 4s, subscriptions outstanding £120, accounts due at present or i shortly £133. It was decided to consider the position in committee. Mr. D. S. Ferguson, of Messrs. Burns, Philp, and Co., was elected a member of the chamber. The council appointed the president (Mr. J. Macintosh), vice-president (Mr. R. W. Waterhouse), Messrs. J. G. Harkness, James M'Lellan, and F. W. Manton to be a special committee to consider questions relating to British trade protection. 'The appointment of such committee was a recommendation from the Chambers of Commerce Conference. No action was Ijaken in regard to the institution of a commercial defence fund, as recommended by the conference, members considering that it would be difficult to control the working of such a fund, and the various (Sections of the chamber now followed the practice of obtaining legal advice on questions of general commercial interest. Approval was expressed of a conference resolution affirming the necessity for closer settlement and improved" conditions for men on the land. ■ Letters were received from Mr. Miura and Y. Nishida, members of the Japanese Trade Commission, thanking the cham-. ber for- courtesies extended.
