A COLUMN DISAPPEARED IN A MORASS (Received October 1, 8:10 a.m.) j PETROGRAD, 30th September. The 35th Infantry Regiment suddenly attacked the Russian positions in "the Eckau district. Despite a murderous machine-gun fire they advanced rapid, ly. The Russians set out three armoured motors, against which the German bullets were powerless, and the regiment was practically annihilated. A small force of guerillas, consisting of peasantry whose homes had been burnt, surrounded a German column in the Pinsk marshes. The Germans were panic-stricken, and the column disappeared in the morass YON MACKENSEN'S ARMY IN A SERIOUS POSITION. AMSTERDAM, 30t-h September. General Moraht, writing in the Berliner Tageblatt, points out the serious situation of General yon Mackensen's army on the Austro-German front in eastern Galicia and north-west Volhynia. He is limited for the moment to defence. . GERMAN CAVALRY WITHDRAWN. , BERLIN, 30th September. A communique states : Field-Marshal yon Hindenburg's attack south-west of Dvinsk has reached the Sventa Lakes.
