STRAIN RELIEVED ON EAST FRONT GERMAN TROOPS WITHDRAWN
(Times and Sydney Sun Services.) (Received October 1, 8 a.m.) LONDON, 3Oth September. > j&r correspondent at Petrograd says that the Allies' offensive in the West instantaneously brought a certain relief to the extreme tension on onr front between Dvinsk and Oshmiany by the withdrawal of the whole of the German Guards Corps from Vilma. Critics expect the transfer to be followed up by others. The Novoe Vremya estimates the German losses in recent defeats on the East front at 75,000. In order to fill up the gap in the western lines Germany must recall an entire army from the East. This will be a difficult task in view of the heavy drain on the German- re-serves-caused by the precarious situation of her armies.
