PUBLIC SPEAKING
* A public speaking competition was held in connection with the "Wellington Accountant Students' Society on Wednesday. The judge was Mr. J. S. Day (ex-pre-sident of the Christchurch. Accountant Students' Society). Competitors were required to write a five minutes' essay on a subject embraced by the examination of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, and in addition to reading the essays were required to answer for five minutes questions pertaining to their papers. The competitors and their subjects were as follows: — Mr. C. A. Clapshaw, "The treatment of stock invoiced to branches at selling price" : Mr. J. M. Preston, "The interpretation of published accounts" ; Mr E. C. Day, "An auditor's duty in regard to the valuation of stock in trade" ; Mr. C. M. Bowden, "The depreciation of ships" ; Mr. C. R. Mazengarb, "The vouching of wages"; and Mr. H. K. Douglas, "Goodwill." The principal part of the competition was a five-minutes' impromptu speech on the subject "The nature of secret reserves, their method of creation and the arguments for and against this practice." The judge, who was accorded a vote of thanks, placed the competitors in the following order : — Mr. Douglas, 1 ; Mr. Clapshaw, 2 ; Mr. Preston, 3.
