COST OF WAR TO AUSTRALIA
MR. FISHER SUPPLIES FIGURES TOTAL MEN SENT TO THE FRONT. (Received August 15, 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Speaking on the Budget, Mr. Fisher, Federal Prime Minister, estimated the naval expenditure for 1915-16 to total £7.289,450. The principal item is five and a-half millions for the hire of transports. The war expenditure is £38.400,000. The amount already borrowed from the British Government is £16.100.000. leaving £8,400.000 still to be borrowed." Of £18,000,000 borrowed on behalf of the States, they had already received £12..125.000T He reviewed the war up to the 6th August. Australia- had equipped ajid sent 76,566 troops to the front, and 5300 reinforcements wer© being sent monthly. For Octfbber and November this number would be doubled. Over 40,000 were in camps, training. The total casualties were 13.976. A large proportion of the *ick and wounded would be able to rejoin.
