CARNIVAL RECEIPTS

APPROXIMATELY £72,000 The treasurer of the National Carnival Fund (Mr. James M'lntosh) has furnished the following statement of receipts to date : — £ s. d. This is not intended to be a complete statement of Carnival receipts, but an acknowledgment of the amounts that have been received by the treasurer. The votes cast for candidates were worth £63,658 9s 6d. Scrip votes represented £52,794 10s 7d ; ticket votes, £1434 5s 2d, and scrip against which the Mayor holds cash, £7025 11s 3d ; making a total of £61,254 7s accounted for, and a balance of £2404 2s 6d to come in. About £1000 of this is known to be in, but has not yet been received by the treasurer. The society has received roughly £4100 which has not been used for the purchase of votes, and the Mayor has another £4000 which has not been included in the vote total, so that the Carnival receipts up to the present amount to about £72,000. It is expected that this sum will be considerably increased when all art unions are finished, and when the Waikato property has been disposed of. The treasurer wishes it to be understood that the statement issued to-day only concerns the money that has come into his own hands and 1 cannot be regarded as complete. WELL FOUGHT, TRENTHAM 1 . Though beaten in the final count the Trentham Boys have reason to be proud of their fight for Carnival Queen honours. Naturally they are disappointed that " the colours" should be lowered on this occasion, but they were battling against odds. Their organising committee was composed of young men who had to pit their energy and enthusiasm against the financial resources and commercial training of such a band of organisers as the Travellers. .. Also, they were late in the Geld, and thereby missed 6everal donations which had already been marked for other candidates. Lieut. Nimmo, organising secretary, and his co-workers, | desire to acknowledge their endebtedness to the Wairarapa people, and particularly Mr. G. R. Sykes, M.P., and Mr. B. Hoare. It was, the country people mainly who stood by the military girl. There were warm supporters in the .city also, with lady friends prominent, among the numbers being Mrs. Haile and the .girls of the T. and G. Mutual Insurance Company, under Miss Sissons. Though the premier position in the list, of candidates was denied them, the people of "Petone — especially those who expended so much energy in the fight — exoress great satisfaction with the result. The progress barometer was watched with the keenest interest all day Saturday, and when it was announced that Miss If. Doughty had been successful the crowd cheered loudly. A donation of £100 has been received from the Commercial Bank of Australia for the Wounded Soldiers' and Sailors' Fund. An account has now been opened at the National Bank of New Zealand in the name of the trustees for the Carnival Fund, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) and the Hon.' J. G. W. Aitken, and transfers are being made thereto from the carnival account.
