CAPTURE OF METZERAL
A GLORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT. VILLAGE WAS A 1 FORTRESS. PARIS, 27th June. The capture of Metzeral ranks among the most glorious deeds of the French arms. The enemy had transformed the village into a veritable fortress. The streets were barricaded, and there were overturned carts masking machine guns. Even the cemetery,, which was the key to the village, was fortified and the vaults mined. After .heavy shelling, the French launched an infantry attack. The cemetery was their first objective. The Germans were driven out. Blowing up the vaults," they began to withdraw from the village, fighting at every step. Every house had its quota of defenders. The Alpini drove the Germans from rooms to cellars and from cellars to barns, and then rounded up the, remainder,' who surrendered.
