GERMANY'S YEARS OF PREPARATION
NETWORK OF MILITARY RAILWAYS. FARMHOUSES AT STRATEGIC POINTS. (Received June 28, 10.10 a.m.) € LONDON, 27th June. Mr. M'Cormick. son of a former American Ambassador at Petrograd, and recently the guest of Grand Duke Nicholas for two months at the fiont, says that the Germans, in years of preparation, besides creating a network of military railways, caused farmers to construct and locate buildings to serve defence purposes throughout East Prussia. The farmhouses all occupy strategic points, and are invariably built with heavy walls" and small windows towards Russia. Many are connected by secret telephones. The Russians at the outset of the war were surprised to find the enemy's first shot strike well-concealed batteries. In j entrenching, nothing could be compared with the Russians. The army is improving as the war proceeds, and is enormously popular.
