SPORTS GALLA
On Saturday the weather succeeded in again interfering with the gala organised by various eporte bodies at the Basin Reserve. Drizzling rain, fell at the .time the procession started from the Government Buildings and continued all tho afternoon. The procession was headed by the members of the National Reserve and sth Regiment Bands, who had combined their forces for the occasion, and included Petone's "Dreadnought," a group of German soldiers manufacturing "gas," and "Jack Johnson " shells, a number of Pierrots and other wearers of fancy dreee, a realistic submarine, and a fine collection of real British bulldogs. The procession attracted a great deal of attention, aa it passed through the city to the Basin Reserve, where a numerous crowd assembled iu^the rain to witness the football, which was the only sport indulged in. In the first part of the afternoon, a. Third Division match, V.M.C.A. v. Brooklyn, proved very interesting. It was won by the former, 4 goals to 2. Later, an exhibition match wae played between two teams picked from among the seniar players of Wellington. The ground was greasy, and the conditions \ver« generally unpleasant, but the players gave a good exposition of the game, which resulted in a draw— three goals each. Mr. C. Webster L wa* th© referee.
