OIL SUPPLIES
A statement was cabled yesterday that at the Shell Transport Company's meeting in London it was said that the desire to develop the production of petroleum within the Empire had not met with conspicuous success, and that hop© had been abandoned of obtaining it in New Zealand. The Hon. James Allen said to-day that he questioned the accuracy of the statement. What he" believed was meant was that "immediate " supplies of petroleum from New Zealand could not be looked for. The Government at. present was assisting the oil companies to got down to 5000 feet to tesfc the > oil at that depth. But ho doubted if anyone had given up hopes of getting oil supplies from New Zealand.
