MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS MEETING OF CITY COUNCIL

At the fortnightly meeting of th© City Council last night there were present his Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), in the chair, and Councillors G. Frost. J. Godbcr,' N. L. Thompson. R. A. Wright. M.P., T. Bush, J. Fuller. W. H. Bennett L. M'Kenzie, J. Hutcheson, W. T. Hildreth. J. E. Fitzgerald, A. R. Atkinson, M. F. Luckie, and W. IT. P. Barber. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Veitch. It was decided that the wages of two tramway employees be made up to full for the time they were absent from work owing to accidents sustained while on duty. The Government Printer is to be. informed that the council cannot accede to his request for a special rednotion for the supply of power for motors which it is proposed to instal at the Government Printing Office. In connection with the Tramways account, the Mayor said that arrangements had been made to raise £40,000. on which interest would be paid only as tlio money was raised. They had to be very careful in regard to expenditure on tramways, and would have, to deny themselves many luxuries. In any case, however, the tramway finances were thoroughly assured. It was decided to erect additional street larop^s at Oriental-terrace. Dixonstreet steps, and near Wade-street at Wadestown. An application to erect a hoarding in Bowen-street was refused. An application for permission to erect two semi-detached houses at the lear of two other houses in Rintoul-stre^t was refused, as the proposal did not comply with the bylaw regarding distance from adjacent boundaries and frontage. The committee advised that the applicant be informed that he can erect one house at the rear of the section in siich a position that he can comply with the building regulation in the above respects. The application of the Director of the Government Meteorological Station for a water supply to the station at the Thorndon Esplanade for evaporation testing purposes was granted subject to certain, conditions. A property owner at Crawford-road is to he offered the formation of a suitahle entrance to his property, with a- concrete retaining wall and asphalt surface, if he will give the necessary land for widening Crawford -road free of charge. Liability was denied for alleged damage to a motor-cycle by a collision with a corporation dust-cart. A four years' lease of section 140, Lambton. Keclaimed Land (Featherstonstreet). was granted to Messrs. Higginson and MacShane, sharebrokerj, at a rental of £135 per annum. The City Engineer recommended the expenditure of a sum estimated at about £8 on rearranging the despatcher's box at the Lambton fetation, which he regarded as entirely unsuitable. , ■ "' " 1
