The 2nd Austrian Army recaptured Lemberg after violent fighting. There was a great outburst of joy throughout Germany and Austria. The capitals were decorated with flags. The Kaiser and Emperor Francis Joseph exchanged congratulations, and the Sultan of Turkey expressed satisfaction. The Kaiser created Archduke Frederick, a Prussian, field-marshal, to mark the occasion. Austrian war correspondents admit that the Russians fought magnificently, and retreated eastward in perfect order. The Austrians found no booty, and took few prisoners.
