NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW
SOME OF THE PRIZE WINNERS (PROM OUR SPECHL RKPOnTHR.) The National Dairy Show, at Palmers-,, ton North, is, generally speaking, a reflex of the 'very successful season which agriculturally has been experienced throughout this province and most parts of New Zealand. " National " the showis in every respect, for it draws its entries and assembles its patrons from almost all quarters of the Dominion, and a prosperous season locally would not alone provide the elements of a successful exhibition. Certainly, in tlie Hawkes Bay district there has been drought, but it does not seem to have affected ' the usual exhibits that come from that quarter ; indeed, more than on© farmer has looked with a certain amount of astonishment- upon the magnificent as sortment of mammoth roots — swedes and beets — that have been sent from Hastings, where the drought has been said tfy have been severely felt. So that the Show, with its. general atmosphere of progress and prosperity, epitomises the flourishing season New Zealand farmers have just experienced. Even the uninitiated, the mere city dweller, who cannot read the romance of gold in the prosaic mounds of butter and cheese, . could scarcely fail to respond to the I general impression that all must be well, extremely well, with our primary productions, ancl with us. In the field roots competition, which was held under the auspices of the Royal Horticultural Society (through affiliation), A. Pnssey. of Pohangina, who last year won the points prize, scored a number of first and second prizes in carrots, mangel wurzels. and swede turnips. Mr. W. J. Balsillie, whose property^ is the famous Kairanga, also did well in these sections ; and Llie Boys' Training Farm at Wereroa. All". Matthews (Hamilton), ancl T. Webb (Palmerston) were other successful competitors. In the farmers' seed and grain classes, j E. A. A. Rose (Blenheim). F. A. Parker (Blenheim), R. Tanner (Kairanga), J. Burmeister (Kairanga). H. Evans (Masterton), J. Murphy (Woodville), and A. Passey (Pohangina-) were principal prizetakers. In potatoes, R. Christensen (Cheltenham), Training Farm (Wereroa), N. Hughes (Maxwelltown), and J. M'Farland (Aorangi) figured most prominently ; and in vegetables, F. Westbury (Taita). L. Wilson CRiccarton), L. A. Abraham (Palmerston North), and T. Webb (Palmerston North). Mr. Westbury virtually scooped the pool in most classes. In the honey classes, C. F. Rainio (Inaha), C. J. Clayton (Canterbury), and C. Mitchell (Manaia) were all prominent prize-winners. In this class the judges were Messrs. F. A. Jacobsen and T. J. Westbrooke, of the Agricultural Department. The interesting feature about the fruit section of the Show is the fact that the Manawatu is brought into competition with more* famous fruit-growing districts, and that it quite held its own. Principal prize-winners were: J. Cushing (West Olive), R. Wilson, jun., (Hastings), L. C. Duncan (UTnukuri), F. Peters (Waipawa), Thos. Keeble (Palmeraton North), G. Shaiio* and Sons (Palmerston North), ancl D. H. M'Culloch (Havelock). The championship prize (for the best collection of apples) was won by J. Cushrng (West Clive), D. H. M'Culloch (Havelock) being second, and L, G. Duncan (Nelson) third.
