WHALE AT LYALL BAY

Jt is reported, that a *7hal<> about 40fl long was stranded on the beach at Lyall Bay on Sunday. The whale was washed up to the east of the bay, near the fishermen's huts. It is said to have been secured by a baching par,ty. In this connection the following paragraph from the Marlborough Express of Tuesday last is interesting: — "The first whales this season were sighted in Cook Strait early on a recent morning. Both were killed, but one was subsequently lusi through the snapping of the line. The other (measuring 46ft) was towed tafely home. The season has started well, and comparatively early, for the first whale killed la.«t year waa on 22nd June."
