NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS
The cabled announcement that Pte. Arthur Clifford Smith had died of wounds is not correct. He was wounded, but is still alive. He was born in Wellington and was educated at tho Wellington South Public School and Wellington College. On leaving college he entered the Public Works Department (engineering branch). When he enlisted, in August last, he hold the position of assistant engineer in charge of railway construction work in the North Auckland district. L.-Cpl. Noel Ross (son of Mr. Malcohn Ross, the New Zealand war cor1 respondent), formerly on the literary I staff of the Evening Ppst ? is recovering | from concussion and injuries while fighting in the Dardanelles. The injuries were received through being blown into a ravine by a shell explosion. Pte. D. J. Lowry (missing sine© Ist May) was for some time a bookbinder jin the Government Printing Office. Pte. Edward Herbert Fisher, late of ! the Telegraph Department (killed), was born at Ingharu, Queensland. He was a. son of Mr. Fisher, of the Valuation Department, and grandson of the late Mr. James Temple FLsher, Postmaster-Gen-eral in Sir George Grey's Administration. He was well known in Rugby Union circles, being one of the representatives who played for the Ranfurly Shield at Taranaki last year, and at different times belonged to the Ma-sterton. Waipukurau, Mataroa, and Poneke Football Clubs. Pte. William John Paul, Canterbury Battalion (killed in action), was tho second son of Mr. Robert J. Paul, of the Lower Hufct, and formerly proprietor of hotels in Blenheim, Hawera, and Paekakarild. Pte. Paul was born in Renwicktown, Blenheim, twenty years ago. Prior to joining the 2nd Reinforcements he resided with his parents at Lower Hutt. For some time he was in the employ of the Wellington Woollen Company. He was a good rifle shot and took a keen interest in football and other sports. Whilst in Egypt he was transferred to the main body of tho Expeditionary Force. His elder brother, Robert Percival Paul, left Wellington the other day with the sth Reinforcements.
