MAGISTRATE'S COURT
. Before Mr. JD. G. A. Cooper, S.M., this morning, a firgt^offending inebriate was convicted and discharged, and Poreival Richard Waddy was fined 10s, with 1 the alternative of 48 hours in gaol. Chas. Dempster and • John Cashman, charged on remand with stealing goods of ■the value of £25, the property of Butferworth Bros., wero further remanded to -the 24th irist. ; ' John Edward Harkor pleaded not guilty to havintf stolen a money belt, containing about £7, the property of A. E. Briorly, at Trentham, on 10th June. The informant, a member of the Expeditionary Force, _ said ho left the belt and its contents in h''s hut on the morning of the 10th irißt.. before leaving for physical drill sft 6.30 a.m. When he returned about 7,15 the belt and contents wore missing. 'Pte. M'Gregor said he slept in the hut. in the next bed but one to the accused, ,w.ho had several times asked him for money. Thursday, 10th Juno, was pay Hay. Before they were paid accused was •spending money, and said that ho had received a month's pay on discharge. He left camp on the following night. Lieut. I}- M'Farlano, of B Company, Ist Battalion, said ho ,paid accused £1 16s on the evening of the 10th. and £1 4s the following day — £3 in all. Detective Tricklebank stated that on arrest accused said to had only it few pounds in his possession; he was, however, found to have £5 2s. Accused, who denied the offence, was convicted. He had been previously convicted of similar offences at Christchurch. He to cent to gaol for threo months, and the Magistrate ordered that the money found on him be paid over to Pte. Brierly. -Arthur Duncan was fined ss. with lls £6sts, ( 'for having neglected to observe the warning : "Stop ! look out tpr the engine," at the Bunny-street Crossing. It was stated that defendant's oart just cleared an approaching engine by a few leet. Donald Fraser, driver of a, motor-car, was charged with having kept his car on the Featherston-street crossing when there Were already six oars there. He was fined 10s, with 7s costs. For allowing stock to wander penalties Were imposed on Mary Fealey (10s and 7s costs).! Frederick M'Leod (5s and 7s costs), Staveley and Waite (20s and 7s costs). Joseph Win. Brown (59 and 7s costs), and Herbert Liddle (5s and, 7s costs).
