FIERCE SAN STRUGGLE STILL GOES ON OFFENSIVE REACHES TO DOLINA PETROGRAD, 28th May. ' Official. — "There is a very stubborn battle on both banks of the San. Between Przemysl and the River Lubasz the fight continues with great inten sity. The enemy on the 25th opened a determined offensive on the whole front from the Dniester marshes to Dolina. The Germans in three days suffered enormous losses, and were nowhere successful. The hostile elements which penetrated between points of support near Stryj were destroyed by our fire. During a counter-attack we took many prisoners." GERMAN LOSSES TOTAL 106,000 LONDON, 28th May. Military critics point out that the Russian trenches south-east of Przemysl are fortified with reinforced concrete. Hence their determined resistance. The Archduke Joseph Ferdinand has concentrated large reinforcements on an eificht-mile line 'from Hussakow. Six miles behind is the Lemberg railway* which is supplying all the Russians in that region It is estimated that the German casualties in the west Galician drive already total 106,000. A VIENNA REPORT AMSTERDAM, 28th May. A Vienna official message says : — "We captured Nienowice and Hosodysko height, taking prisoners totalling two thousand and six guns. We penetrated the main position near Hussakow, south-east of Pizemysl. capturing 2800 prisoners and eleven machine guns. We have broken the line near Slr\ j ;nd the Russians are retreating." THE NORTHERN BATTLES (Received May 29, 8.40 a.m.) PETROGRAD, 28th May. Official.— There has been successful fighting in the Shavli region, and several hundred prisoners were taken, besides many nWorcars. The enemy at Jedwnbno (in Poland, north-east of Lomza) made a fruitless attack under cover of poisonous gases.
