BORROWED NAMES.
if The most complete overshadowings of tho original places by the colonial namesakes are (say an English contemporary) those in which the latter have been named, so to speak, at one remove — through the title of a great man. Leading cases are Melbourne, Wellington, and Auckland, the vast majority of whose inhabitants could not find their English originals on the map, and have never heard of them. How many people in Baltimore (U.S.) could spot Baltimore jn Ireland? And, although the wellinformed of Queensland's capital may know of Sir Thomas Brisbane, there are probably few who are aware that his native place was Brisbane, in Ayrshire. Ignorance of this kind is at least as common in the Old Country. There was the Imperially-minded lady who thought it so nice of Lord Melbourne to take his title from an Australian city.
