NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Sir Lancelot.") | The acceptances received for the opening day of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Meeting on Thursday next are very satisfactory. If the club ie fortunate enough to strike fine weather for the holiday (King's Birthday) a successful meeting should result. Achilledea and Acbilleua arrived from Blenheim yesterday, and were railed through to Otaki to fulfil their engagements there next • - ■ Mr. J. M'Do^._., jjn., and Eonald Cameron, the weli-kuown New Zealand jockey, who now follows the occupation of trainer, returned to the Dominion by t iv •>, icsteruay. They have been racing Fireworks, Styx, and Rongopai in Victoria, but on receipt of a cabie-rr;i-n a'i"Oi'pring l^p drath of Mr. J. R. M'Donald they.-ieturned nome. Tho stillion Mrec.rm (Carbine — Hestia) died recently in the Oamaru district, vhcre ha did stud duty last season at Mr. Bruce Christie's stud, where Kilrain r , '. .« -.-T.'rjrrne'T v:vre bred. Firearm was bred a.t Wapiti by the late Jhtujjr *\Aijj±i George in 1895, his dam, Hestia, by Grandmaster — Wildfire (imp.), by Wild Oats— Dynamite, by Musket, belonging to a successful family. Gozo (by Wild Oate), mated with Industry (daughter of Musket), produced Gaulus and The Grafter (two Melbourne Cup winners). Bred as he was, it is difficult to account for Firearm being such a failure both on the Tnrf and at the stud. Hestia had half-a-dozen produce by Nelson, but none of them were great performers. She also had a colt and filly by Cyrenian, and was sold to Mr. Sol Green, of the Shipley Stud, Victoria. J. Ayers railed Ladoga through to Auckland on Wednesday night. From South Canterbury the death is announced of the stallion Heroism (Grafton — Grafin), who carried the colours of his breeder (Mr. Dan O'Brien) to victory in the Wanganui Stakes and other races. During one of his Australian visits Mr. O'Brien purchased the yearling filly Grafin (a daughter of his old favourite Carbine). Her first colt, by Loyalty (who earned the "rose and black" stripes into victory in Australia and the Dominion), died. 'To Grafton she produced Heriot, Heroism, Grenade, and a full brother and sister to the performers named, that died. She produced Maranui (the Caulh'eld Cup winner) and a filly, that died, by Malatua. The latter (by Malua — Faithful) was one of Mr. O'Brien's Australian purchases. He was a good but unlucky three-year-old. He ran second in the Manawatu Cup, Dunedin Cup, D.J.C. Handicap, and Great Easter Handicap. As a four-year-old he ran second iv the New Zealand Cup to Seahorse, second in the Metropolitan to Explosion, and woti the Jockey Club Handicap. He also won the Great Easter and ran second in the Great Autumn to Dundas. Heriot produced Multifid, who was considered unlucky to lose the New Zealand Cup when Star Rosse won, and won the Canterbury Cup at the same meeting. The Multiform horse has since made a name for himself as a successful sire. The second batch of Marble Arch's progeny have done well in the Dominion this season. One of them recently got on the winning list in Victoria. rThis was the two-year-old Calton, one of Mr. Geo, Curries breed, from Holyrood, an imported mare by Symington — 'Lady Dunboyne, by Carbine— -Bonnie Chance, by Minting. Caiton was sold at the Sydney sales to Mr. S. Miller, the wellknown Victorian owner, and carried his colours when he scored his first win at Moonee Valley on the 19th inst. Killaloo and Margarita are to be shipped _ to Sydney on Thursday week, in charge of W. J. Porter. Killaloo put up fast time when he scored his first win in a hurdle race on .the second day of the Oamani meeting, and should pay his wav in short-distance hurdle races. Margarita should win races in the pony class in which it is intended to race her. Mr. George Curries imported mare Eulogy has foaled a filly by Coriander. After racing at Oamaru Charmilla and Honesty went back to the Elderslie Stud. Honesty (Martian — Success) won £800 in stakes this season. The New Plymouth owner-trainer, J. George, will have Pioyal Arms, Crown Pearl, and Glenroy at the Auckland Meeting. The performers named have won over £2000 between them this season. Daylight Bill has won £1000 in stakes this season. There will be more fourfigure winners this season than in any previous one.
