TRAMWAY SERVICE

LARGE SUM REQUIRED FOR URGENT WORKS

A request for the erection of a tramway shelter-shed at the Newtown Park terminus was recently made by the Melrose Ratepaeyre'.' Association. The council decided last' 1 night that it was not prepared to carry out the work at present. The Mayor stated that the council had had placed before it, in committee, a list of tramway works involving an expenditure of £69,000. Not one of the items could be cut out. In view of that expenditure it was plain that the council could not comply with all requests. Seen by a Post reporter to-day regarding the list of tramway works which had to be carried out, the Mayor stated that there were some requirements which must be met to ensure the full amount of efficiency possible being obtained from the tramway system. The Constablestreet extension was a work of considerable magnitude, as also was the proposed new car-shed at Kilbirnie. A water tube boiler was also required for the power-house. Feeders were necessary i in different parts of the city as well as outside the city to meet the strain of transmission. Duplication was absolutely necessary at Island Bay and Brooklyn owing to 'the growing needs of those districts, to do away with the long delay caused by cars waiting at sidings, so that full benefit might be obtained from the too limited number of cars at present available. More cars were necessary. Nos. 103-112 (inclusive) had to be completed, and" were now waiting for the undergear, while Nos. 113-115 (inclusive) required to be built. These works would represent a considerable expenditure but were absolutely imperative to relieve the congestion experienced in most parts of the city and outskirts, especially during rush hours, and to allow of the, tramway undertakings being worked to their full capacity on economical lines.
