ESCAPE FROM SOMES ISLAND
TWO INTERNED GERMANS GET AWAY. Last evening, about 8 o'clock, two of the German prisoners interned on Somes Island commandeered a row boat and made good their escape. It was dark, and it was not noticed in what direction they made off. This morning, however, the empty boat was found on the shore of the harbour between Rona Bay and Day's Bay, and it is believed that the men are now hiding somewhere in the vicinity of Day's Bay. At an early hour to-day the police received a message to say that they had been captured, but further enquiries showed that this information was bogus. Every effort is being made by the police to capture tho escapees. A strong military patrol is also at work, and at latest was hot on the track of the Germans. As coon as the escape was discovered the police and military authorities were informed, and the whole of the' harbour, front was patrolled, the men stationed afc the forts being called out. The Son>«-s Island guard reached Day's Bay before the boat containing the Germans, but, owing to the extensive area of beacb to be patrolled, the latter were able to elude capture. Arrangements were then made to prevent" an escape .rom the Day's Bay district. The names of those who escaoed are Rediger and Kdekie. , Redder; is a rail, well-built man, who, before beinj; interned, posed as a Norwegian. Kuskie is short and thin; with curly hair, aiid previously passed himself off as H. J. Mortimer. Both men were wearing working clothes when they escaped. At 3 o'clock this afternoon the police received word that the two escapees had been seen in the vicinity of Mr. Riddiford's Orongorongo station.
