BIG GUN BATTLE.
ROUND ABOUT YPRES SCREENING THE CONCENTRATION OF TROOPS THE EASTERN FRONT GERMANY'S NEW OFFENSIVE ENEMY ATTACK ON HILL 60 REPULSED WITH HEAVY LOSS
To screen the concentration of troops both of the contestants round about Ypres are fighting a big gun battle. Eield-Marshal French reports that the enemy made further attacks on Hill6o and St. Julien, but that both ,were repulsed with heavy losses, despite the fact that the Germans used poisonous gases. In the valley of the Aisne, and also in the Champagne district, the enemy has been guilty of similar breaches of the rules of warfare. The French artillery have, with considerable effect, bombarded the southern front of an entrenched camp at Metz. 'An official message from Petrograd states that ihe Germans are occupying the Shavli district, some distance from the Baltic coast, and that German torpedo boats have visited the Gulf of Riga. No thing of interest from the Carpathians has come to hand to-day. In Russia it is believed that Italy's intervention in tue war is nearer at hand than was expected, and there are rumours that Austria, aware of th^s, is. preparing for the .worst. Feeling between the United States and Germany is becoming more acute, because America continues to supply munitions of war to ihe Allies. ■> • . - tt . • ■ - • -
