The Kilbirnie school children did well in swimming last eeaaon. Swimming certificates were issued to 42 children, some of whom ewam the distance of 3300 yards. Eight certificates for lifesaving vreroalso granted. A fortnight ago the wife of the Mayov of Auckland appealed for 6000 pairs of socks and v for handkerchiefs for tlie Auckland soldiers. La&t night Mrs. Parr announced that she had received 5000 pairs of socka and cash sufficient to buy 4000 more pairs, while the school children of the province had sent in between 10,000 and 12,000 handkerchiefs. "Your committee considers this mode of distributing 8d literature throughout the city a great boon to the young people," said the Chairman (Mr. D. Robertson), in his annual report of the Clyde-quay school.'' He was referring to tho library which had been supplied to the school by the City Council.
