AN INJURED EYE

HOW DID IT OCCUR? A COMPENSATION CLAIM. An accident of rather an unusual kind was the subject, of a claim made at the Arbitration Court to-day by Duilo Picchi, of Wellington, fish curer, against the Hawkes Bay Fisheries Co., Ltd. Mr. Justice Stringer presided over the sitting. It was alleged by plaintiff that on 16th November, while cleaning and chopping fish at the company's place of business, he sustained an injury by an accident arising out of and in the course of his employment in that while he was so engaged a noxious germ or particle of deleterious matter came into contact with his left eye, setting up a septic condition as a result of which he was totally disabled for ten weeks, and had sustained in addition permanent injury, the sight of the left eye being totally and permanently destroyed. Plaintiff's average weekly earnings prior to the accident had been £3 10s. He claimed the sum of £230 10s, made up as follows: ten' weeks' total disablement, £17 10s; weekly payment of 17s 6d for remainder of the period of liability, £212; medical expenses, £1. The defendant company denied that the accident arose from plaintiff's employment. Mr. P. J. O'Regan appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. T. Neave for the defendant company. (Proceeding.)
