ON SERVICE NEW ZEALANDERS' WORK (FROM ODR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, 19th January. The remaining members of the British section of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who remained behind to clear up affairs at Bulford, leave to-day for Egypt. Lieutenant and Quartermaster May is in command. The names of the men are : — Corporals T. Falvey and Holtham, Lance-Corporal Oement, Privates Norrie aad Marychurch. The following seven new members who have recently joined in London are also going '.—Privates J. T. R. Mowatt, C. Milling, C. W. Hayes, W. J. Roberts, H. Thompson, Vemo.n Scudds, James Flood. Private M'Loughlin. who missed the transports at Colombo and came on to London by a Bibby liner, is ateo, one of the party. Lieutenant C. Campbell May is attached to the 22nd Battalion Manchester Regiment, at Morecambe. Lieutenant .Laing (from King Edward's Horse) has joined the East Surreys, Dr. Mary Blair (late of Wellington) has been over at a hospital in Boulogne for a few weeks. She hopes to return there again later. Miss S. Carrie Jones is a New Zealander on board the military hospital ship Valdina. Captain H. E. Grace, late of H.M.S. New Zealand, j s gazetted to the Attentive, additional, for special service. Lieutenant E. G. Rhodes, R.N., has been transferred to the Bacchante. Edinburgh University has published a Roll of Honour giving the names of past and present students on active service. Promotion is gazetted for Lieutenant H. J. I. Walker, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, who is now captain (temporary). Captain Walker, who is from Auckland, joined his regiment in 1911. Shortly after going to the front he was reported missing for a time. His promotion dates from 15th November last. The appointment of Lieut. -.Colonel Montagu Cradock, C.8., 2nd King Edward's Horse, is antedated to 10th August last. Lieutenant E. H. Taylor (Auckland), who was gazetted in June last to the York a.nd Lancaster Regiment, is now in England with l*s battalion, having returned with them from India. He spent a few days last week in London, and is now at Winchester, where his regiment was inspected by the King and Lord Kitchener a few days ago, on the eve of their departure for the front. Captain Duigan, R.N.Z.A., has reached England, invalided from Egypt, with Lieutenant- Colonel T. W. M 'Donald, who commanded the Otago Infantry Battalion with the Expeditionary Force. Colonel M 'Donald is also invalided. Captain Duigan and Captain R. 0. Chesney, also of the R.N.Z.A., have been promoted majors. Captain Chesney is at present at Warwick with one of Kitchener's armies, but is about to proceed to Northampton. , Major-General E. H. Da vies, C.8., is commanding the 21st Division of Kitchener's new armies at Aldershot. Mr. G. S. Bogle and Mr. J. E. Anderson, who entered the Public Works Department in New Zealand in the same year and were together at Whangarei when they obtained leave to go abroad for experience, have received commissions dated the same day, 9th January, in the Royal Engineers. TJiey have now gone to Chatham for a few weeks' training before joining one of the field companies. Mr. Bogle was a sapper in the Ist Field Company of the Canadian Force when he came to England. Mr. Anderson remained in Canada for a few weeks to sit for his A.M.1. C.E., and Mr. Bogle will probably sit for his in London before going to the front. Captain Harold S. Williams, of the Dorset Regiment, is seconded for service on the- staff. Mr. Leo Myers, late president, Auckland • Chamber of Commerce, has just enlisted as a private in the 2nd Battalion (' Sportsmen") attached to the Royal Fusiliers. The Ist Battalion, which has been in training for three months, is expected to go to the front within the next four weeks. The headquarters of the 2nd Battalion are at Romford, where a camp is being prepared for the three months training. Colonel Paget is in command, and there are a number of gentlemen rankers in the corps. The qualifications for joining the Sportsmen's Battalions are good riding, shooting, and marching. Mr. Myers was speaking recently at a big recruiting meeting at the^ Shorediteh Public Library. G. D. Harle (Milburn, Otago) is attached to the 78th Field Ambulance, R.A.M.C., now stationed at Exmouth. Lieutenant Lancelot C. Pitman (Christchurch) i* promoted captain, corps of Royal Engineers. | Surgeon-Lieutenant L. Bruce Stringer (Christchurch) is with the West Kent Yeomanry at Maidstone. Trooper James L. Walker (of New Zealand), King Edward's Horse, has enlisted as private in the 18th Hussars, stationed at present at Aliwal Barracks, Tidworth, Hampshire. Mr. Alexander Barr, lately chief officer in the U.S.S. Company's service, who escaped from Antwerp with his wife and children just before the German occupation, has been appointed first officer of the Saxonia, which has been taken over by the Admiralty. Mr. .J. 'W. Flood (Auckland) expects to_ leave 'London shortly for Egypt to join the New Zealand troops. He has been spending a few weeks in Nottinghamshire with relatives. ' ' Second Lieutenant William Henry Dillon Bell, King Edward's Horse, is gazetted lieutenant in the same regiment. Second Lieutenant A. R. Campbell Begg (Dunedin) is at Boulogne, working with the British Red Cross. • Mr. Alfred Nuttall (Picton) is with the 3rd Field Ambulance Canadian Expeditionary Force, now at Bulford. Mr. H. Sten Hurle (New Plymouth) has joined the Public Schools' Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, in camp at Epsom. Lieutenant C. H. Loughnan is a member of the 218 th Battalion, Royal Field Artillery, at Bulford. Lieutenant H. M. Fraser is in the 13th Battalion, Rifle Brigade, at High 'Wycombe. Dr. H. Donald Robertson (Wellington) is gazetted lieutenant R.A.M.C. A New Zealander attached to the Royal Engineers is J. E. Andrews; he is now at Chatham. Captain Alec. Taylor, New Zealand Veterinary Corps, who went to Egypt with the New Zealand troops, proceeded to England, and after spending a few days with his relatives and transacting business, is returning to New Zealand by the Rotorua. It will be remembered that he had six months' leave of absence from the Lincoln Agricultural College. Mr. Roland Garrett (late of Wanganui) was one of sixty who reached England on Christmas Eve from the Federated Malay States, all having in mind one idea — to enlist for the war. Twenty of them' left their steamer at Marseilles and hurried overland to England. Mr. Garrett was disappointed to find that the British section of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force had already left for Egypt, as he was anxious to join this body. Meanwhile, he has joined King Edward's Horse so as to lose no time, and he hopes to hear from General Godley in due course. Some few years ago, Mr. Garrett belonged to the Wanganui Highland Volunteer Rifles, and latterly he was a member of the Federated Malay States Volunteer Rifles. While in town he was staying with his aunt, Mrs. Henry Fawcett. Dr. R. Buddie, M.B. (Auckland), temporary fleet, surgeon, has been appointed to H.M.S. Cumberland. An ex-King's College boy, who is now second-lieutenant, 12th Service Battalion, Essex Regiment, stationed at Dovercourt, is Mr. L. E. Felix Smith, of Auckland. He arrived in England some time ago to gain experience in electrical engineering, and has been for some time with Messrs. Crompton and Co., of Chelmsford. Mr. John Robertson (Auckland), a Cambridge student, who joined King Edward's Horse, has been appointed to a commission (second-lieutenant) with the Gordon Highlanders. Mr. R. H. Marryatt (Milton) has been given a commission as second-lieutenant in. the sth Battalion, Worcester Regiment (Infantry).
