SLAUGHTERMEN'S DISPUTE

A meeting of the Ngahauranga and Petone Slaughtermen's Union was held last night at Petone, when the question of obtaining a new award for abattoir work was discussed. It was pointed out that some difficulty would bo met with under the present system of tendering for the work. At present the contract is fixed up by the council, and the wages are arranged for afterwards between the contractor and the men. Tenders will close on the 18th of this month for killing and slaughtering for the next three years, and the union decided at last night s meeting to notify as publicly as possible to those persons who are likely to bo tenderers that there is a prospect of the union's asking for an increase of wages to the extent of 5s per week, so that whoever may be the successful tenderer will have some opportunity of knowing what he has to meet with in the near future. It is also intended to ask to do away vith Sunday work. The union feels that work on this day is unnecessary, as at other 'abattoirs in New Zealand where the climate is warmer than in Wellington, the practice °v i m ? n worl " n g on Sundays has been abolished for some time past, und if they are called upon to work on this particular day special rntes are paid. A committee has been appointed, and a new set of conditions have been drafted, which will be filed in tho Court of Arbitration shortly.
