NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE POPULAR IN CANADA.

"There is not much hope of our doing a big business in dairy produce with Sari Frahcisco." This is the opinion of Mr. J. G. Harkness, manager of tho National Dairy Association, who has just returned to Wellington after a business visit to San Francisco and Vancouver. "There are great possibilities for that State," Mr. Harkness continued, "and, in the near future, if they are not doing it at present, they will pro« duco sufficient butter for their own requirements. At the same time, them are people in the provision trade who maintain that there is still a good market in San Francisco for tho best brands of New Zealand butter. Unfortunately, Australian butter is at present being imported, and in many in* stances is being sold as New Zealand, which does not add to the reputation of our produce I was present on one or Wo occasions at the meetings of the Produce Exchange in San Francisco, when the wholesale price for butter was fixed at 27 cents (Is lid). On that date (Ist February) New Zealand butter was probably worth 33 or 34 cents (Is Sd) ,in Vancouver. The reason for the difference is mainly that San Francisco has a plentiful supply of her own butter, ' while British Columbia does not produce sufficient for her own requirements, and is unlikely to do so for so-nie time to come." Mr. Harkness referred to the (surcharge of 5 per cent, recently imposed by the Dominion Government, and its probable effect on the market. "As a lulc," he continued, " New Zealand butter is sold as such, in Vancouver, and the consumer knows it, because it is somewhat paler in colour than the Canadian product and does nob contain so much salt. It was ticketed up in retail shops at 40 cents (Is 8d) ; and, so far as I could judge, was used exclusively in some of the leading hotels and clubs. It has given satisfaction and has quite a reputation 5 consequently the wholesale man and the retailers are pre« pared to give a somewhat higher pride for it even than for butter made in Canada. The additional duty imposed by the Dominion Government will be & serious handicap to us in New Zealand.

The paintings, drawings, and etchings of Hermina Arhdt will be on view from 4 till 6 daily this week, nt Bartiett's studio, 10. Willis-street. Tenders are invited for the erection of an automatic telephone exchange at
